While we’re trying to be more sustainable and health-conscious in all areas of life, one place I’m extra vigilant about is our sleep space. I want it to be healthy for the environment of course, but given that we spend about a third of our lives there, I want to make sure the space is as healthy as it can be for us too. I consider things like the indoor air quality, lighting (I’m all about some blackout curtains!), and the fabrics and textiles we’re in close contact with all night. That means I take extra consideration to our sheets and bedding and try to choose the healthiest and most sustainable option.
Sometimes the most sustainable choice is one that’s pretty old school. Hemp is a textile that’s been around for thousands of years and happens to be one of the most sustainable textile crops to grow. While better choices like organic cotton are certainly a step up in terms of your health and impact on the environment, hemp stands out as it needs very little water to grow and doesn’t require pesticides or herbicides.
So I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical when I first considered hemp sheets. As my husband may accuse me of being pretty picky about bedding, I did envision hemp feeling coarse and stiff. But I have to say when I felt the sheets for the first time I was amazed at how soft they actually are, and they keep getting softer with each wash. One thing I noticed is that it does a much better job of temperature control than our cotton sheets. When it’s cold out, these stay warm, yet when it’s hot these seem to keep us cooler. We’ve actually been sleeping really well on these sheets!
